Interval House donation

Christmas is a joyous occasion for most, but for some women and children it can also be a time of despair. We may, indeed, live in God's country but that does not mean domestic abuse does not happen here in our community. In fact, current statistics indicate the incidence of such abuse in rural areas such as Lanark Highlands is well in excess of national averages.

This article in the The Millstone shines a light on the size of the problem locally. "Here in Lanark County, the OPP reported that in the past year there were 553 Domestic Occurrences, 7 cases of suspected Human Trafficking, and 97 Sexual Offences. In the same period, Lanark County Interval House provided an extensive array of services to 527 women and children, 80 of whom sought refuge at the shelter, and received 4,815 crisis calls."

While Lanark County Interval House provides much needed services in support of those women and children subject to domestic abuse, continuing to provide those services has a cost and they rely heavily on donations to continue operations.

As one of DWLC's objectives is to support "health and social wellness" for residents, the Executive Committee has decided to provide Interval House with a $500 donation.  It is also our hope that by publicizing this donation other community centres and individuals may consider making their own contributions to this very important service in our community.

Knitter Knatter paused until January 10

The organizer of the Knitter Knatter group (which meets every Tuesday from 1-3 PM) has advised that due to illness (COVID) the group meetings are being paused until after the holidays. They will reconvene Tuesday, January 10, at 1 PM.

Further information about the group can be obtained from Eloise Kelly at 613-623-6703.

Calling all darters.

Well the darts group is off to a good start but the organiser, Gil Turner, is looking for a few more players to come out Friday afternoons (1-3 PM) for some friendly competition (bragging rights only!). The cost is just a twoonie, which goes towards upkeep of the Centre.

Gil has also instituted a Pizza Friday, held the last Friday of each month. For another $4.75 you can get an extra large slice to sustain you while throwing darts in the general direction of one of the three boards set up. An RSVP is required if you want to have a pizza so the correct amount is ordered.

With winter officially upon us now, what better way to spend a couple of hours than enjoying a fun activity at the Centre? It's open to all, novice and pro alike (although we have yet to see any pros). All you need is a set of darts.

Give Gil a call (or text) at 613-622-5949, or just show up.

Hope to see you Friday!

How to subscribe to this blog - techie stuff

Following one or more blogs can be a challenge if you have to search each one individually to see if there's anything new. Wouldn't it be nicer just to get an email message in your inbox when a new post is published?

Some blogging tools include a feature to do just that, 'push' new posts out to subscribers. Unfortunately Google has recently removed that option from their Blogger application, which is the one we use.

So we have had to search for an alternate approach, and I think we've found it with follow.it. You can now simply subscribe by entering your email address in the box to the right. Then once a day you'll get an email listing any new posts since the last update. You can also 'unsubscribe' at any time using the links in the notification email.

If you opt for the free version (and why wouldn't you?) you can follow up to 5 different sites, i.e. DWLCentre.blogspot.com and 4 others.

Based on our preliminary evaluation, the product seems to work as advertised, however please let us know if you experience any issues with using it.

Bottled water

Some of you may have seen this sign posted on the refrigerator door at the Centre:

Drinking water from a plastic, throw-away bottle is environmentally damaging, so the Executive Committee has decided to actively encourage the drinking of tap water in the Centre. Our water is tested regularly and is a clean, healthy alternative to bottled water and its inherent waste.

Help do your part, forego the bottle and grab a glass. (Just remember to wash it when you're done.) Or bring your own, refillable, travel mug. The environment will thank you for "using the tap".

"I'm going alone"

If you understand the title, then you're a euchre player and we have good news for you.

Beginning December 5, 2022, euchre is back at the Centre on Monday afternoons from 1 - 3 PM. Whether you're a seasoned player or a newbie (don't worry, we'll teach you) come on out for fun and friendship.

There's no need to RSVP; just show up. The usual $2 at the door applies.
